Raising Awareness With AFC: Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2024

AFC Youth • October 28, 2024

As we step into October, we join communities nationwide in observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This month serves as a critical reminder of the impact of domestic violence on individuals and families, and the importance of education, advocacy, and support systems in addressing this pervasive issue.

Understanding Domestic Violence

Domestic violence encompasses a range of harmful behaviors, including physical violence, emotional abuse, sexual assault, and stalking. It affects millions of people, regardless of age, gender, or background. During DVAM, we aim to raise awareness about these issues, promote prevention strategies, and support survivors in their journey toward healing.

The Importance of Community-Based Initiatives

One of the most effective ways to combat domestic violence is through community-based initiatives that focus on prevention, intervention, treatment, and response services. This is where organizations like AFC come into play.

Project SHIFT: Supporting Our Youth

AFC’s Project SHIFT is a transformative initiative designed specifically for youth aged 12-18 who are impacted by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Understanding that these issues can profoundly affect young lives, Project SHIFT offers a comprehensive array of services aimed at fostering resilience and healing.

What Does Project SHIFT Offer?

  1. Prevention Programs: Project SHIFT engages youth through educational workshops and outreach programs that raise awareness about healthy relationships, consent, and the warning signs of abusive behavior. These initiatives empower young people to make informed decisions and promote a culture of respect and safety.
  2. Intervention Services: For those who have already experienced violence, Project SHIFT provides immediate support and intervention. This includes counseling services, crisis intervention, and access to resources that help youth navigate the complexities of their situations.
  3. Treatment Options: Healing from trauma is a crucial part of recovery. Project SHIFT offers therapeutic services that cater to the specific needs of young survivors, helping them process their experiences and build coping strategies.
  4. Response Support: In addition to direct services, Project SHIFT collaborates with local law enforcement and community organizations to ensure that youth have a clear and supportive path to safety. This collaborative approach enhances the response to incidents of violence, making sure that young people are treated with dignity and respect.

Why Focus on Youth?

Focusing on youth is essential because early intervention can drastically alter the trajectory of a young person’s life. By providing the right support and education, we can help youth break the cycle of violence and empower them to build healthier relationships in the future.

How You Can Help

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, consider taking the following actions:

  • Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the signs of domestic violence and share this information within your community. Knowledge is a powerful tool in prevention.
  • Support Local Initiatives: Get involved with organizations like AFC and Project SHIFT. Whether through volunteering, donating, or participating in events, your support can make a significant difference.
  • Advocate for Change: Use your voice to advocate for policies and programs that support survivors and work to prevent violence in your community.
  • Be There for Someone: If you know someone who may be experiencing domestic violence, offer your support. Sometimes, just being a listening ear can be incredibly helpful.

Conclusion

As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, let’s commit to creating a world where every individual can live free from fear and violence. By supporting initiatives like AFC’s Project SHIFT, we can provide vital resources and education to our youth, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and foster a future of hope and resilience.

Each year on July 28 , the world comes together to recognize World Hepatitis Day , a global call to action to raise awareness, fight stigma, and increase access to testing and treatment for viral hepatitis. This year’s theme, “One Life, One Liver”, reminds us just how vital liver health is — and how preventable and treatable hepatitis can be with the right education and support systems in place. At Ambassadors for Christ , we stand on the frontlines of prevention and education through our EQUIP Program , which provides STD prevention education and free testing opportunities to at-risk youth in our community. Hepatitis B and C — two of the most common forms of viral hepatitis — can be spread through sexual contact, making youth-centered sexual health education not just important, but essential. Through EQUIP , young people gain access to: Accurate, judgment-free education on sexual health and hepatitis prevention Free, confidential testing for STDs and hepatitis Resources to understand treatment options and how to protect themselves and others Safe spaces for honest conversations about risk, health, and healing In a time where misinformation can spread faster than any virus, knowledge becomes power. Programs like EQUIP empower youth with the tools they need to take control of their health and build futures free from stigma and disease. On this World Hepatitis Day, we encourage everyone to: Get tested and know your status Educate yourself and others about how hepatitis spreads and how to prevent it Support organizations like Ambassadors for Christ that are doing the work on the ground every day Together, we can prevent new infections, support those living with hepatitis, and build a healthier future — one youth, one family, one community at a time. April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) — a time to raise our voices, spread awareness, and stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault and trafficking. In 2025, the theme continues to emphasize prevention, empowerment, and healing , reminding us that creating safe communities begins with education, empathy, and action. Sexual assault affects millions of individuals across all walks of life. According to recent statistics, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime. Survivors often carry invisible scars — trauma, isolation, and fear — that extend far beyond the moment of abuse. But during SAAM, we collectively send a powerful message: You are not alone. Empowering Survivors with Support and Hope One organization making a tangible difference is Ambassadors For Christ Youth Ministries (AFC) . Dedicated to uplifting vulnerable and at-risk youth, AFC plays a vital role in providing resources, counseling, and faith-based support to victims of sexual assault and trafficking. AFC understands that healing is not one-size-fits-all. For survivors, especially young people, finding a safe space to process their pain and reclaim their identity is essential. Through mentorship programs, trauma-informed care, spiritual guidance, and access to community resources, AFC offers a holistic approach to recovery . "We believe in meeting people where they are — with compassion, faith, and practical help," says one AFC advocate. "Our mission is to be a light in the darkness and a voice for those who have been silenced." Raising Awareness, Inspiring Change During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, AFC ramps up its advocacy efforts by: Hosting educational workshops for teens and families on consent, healthy relationships, and online safety. Collaborating with local schools and churches to increase awareness and create safe reporting spaces. Partnering with law enforcement and shelters to assist those escaping trafficking situations. Their work reminds us that prevention starts with empowering youth, educating communities , and never shying away from difficult conversations. How You Can Get Involved Everyone has a role to play in ending sexual violence. This April, consider: Wearing teal , the official color of SAAM, to show your support. Sharing survivor stories (with permission) or resources on social media. Donating to or volunteering with organizations like Ambassadors For Christ Youth Ministries that are on the front lines of this fight. Hosting a prayer circle, awareness walk, or informational event in your community. Final Thoughts Sexual Assault Awareness Month isn’t just about raising awareness — it’s about creating a world where every survivor feels heard, supported, and safe. With organizations like Ambassadors For Christ Youth Ministries , we are reminded that there is hope beyond trauma , and healing is possible. Together, we can stand with survivors, amplify their voices , and work toward a future free from abuse and exploitation. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or connect with Ambassadors For Christ Youth Ministries at afcyouth.org for faith-centered support and resources.
